We are opening a new office in Ålesund — at the centre of Norway's maritime hub
We are expanding our Norwegian footprint with a new office in Ålesund, placing us also at the heart of one of Europe’s most concentrated maritime clusters.
The decision reflects a deliberate move to get closer to the talent, the shipyards, and the industry networks that define the Sunnmøre region. Ålesund is home to a dense concentration of naval architects, offshore engineers, and maritime specialists — as well as The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Ålesund, whose maritime engineering programme has strong ties to local industry, and several major shipyards operating nearby.
“Within ship design and shipbuilding, Ålesund is really the hub in Norway,” says Severin Ulstein, our new Head of Office. “There is a large and highly skilled community here — and being close to that environment matters, both for recruitment and for how we develop as a company.”
Severin brings more than two decades of experience from the regional maritime industry, including senior roles in concept development at one of Norway’s largest naval architecture firms. We brought him in specifically to build the Ålesund office from the ground up — defining how it works, who it hires, and what kind of business it develops.
Our new office is located at Kongens gate 19, in the centre of Ålesund, with views over the iconic Brosundet and the city waterfront.
A broader resource base — and our own business in Ålesund
The office will serve two purposes. It expands our pool of qualified specialists who can support work across our offices in Bergen, Toulouse and Szczecin. At the same time, it will develop its own project pipeline, with a focus on specialised vessels and offshore support — segments where demand in the region is strong.
The office is already working on several concept development projects — work that, as designs mature, will create demand for equipment suppliers and engineering services in the region.
“LMG has a broader and more diverse portfolio than most ship design offices in this area,” Severin notes. “A lot of the local work is concentrated in offshore and fishing — which is important — but LMG gives people the chance to work across a much wider range of vessel types and markets. I think that will be genuinely attractive to good people here.”
Global backing, local presence
Our Ålesund office enters the market with a significant commercial advantage: direct access to our established relationships with shipyards across Europe and Asia, built through our parent company Seatrium — one of the world’s leading marine and offshore engineering groups.
That network means a steady flow of real projects for our team in Ålesund and provides the financial stability and long-term backing that a newly established design office would not typically have. For experienced engineers considering a move, it removes much of the uncertainty that would otherwise come with joining at this stage.
Now recruiting
We are looking to hire naval architects, mechanical engineers, and stability engineers to form our founding team in Ålesund. Our ambition is to establish a strong core group that can grow the office and take on increasingly complex projects over time.
We also intend to build a close relationship with NTNU in Ålesund, including opportunities for students to contribute to our projects and complete bachelor’s and master’s theses in collaboration with our team.
